Brittany Cafe & Bakery is definitely full of character. The first thing you notice is the warm and cozy feel of this casual eatery. Open everyday for breakfast and lunch, this neighbourhood secret has been making great food at low prices for the past eight years.

Forest green walls are covered with paintings, mirrors, photos and press clippings. A large bookshelf holds a melange of knick-knacks, collectibles as well as newspapers and magazines for customers to enjoy. Tables, chairs, plates and cups are a mish-mash of patterns and styles that lend to the cafe's personality and charm.

Grab a table and go on up to the counter to place your order, then take your seat and they will bring your meal to you. Traditional diner-fare abounds - omelets, sandwiches, French toast, eggs benedict and hearty homemade soups, as well as some non-traditional items like chicken quesadillas and quiche are featured. Desserts are not forgotten with a variety of tempting pies, cookies, cakes, squares and muffins available and all made on premises. And, with the majority of menu items priced under $5, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better deal anywhere.

On our most recent visit we enjoyed a great lunch where two of us dined for under $12 - can you believe it?! We began by sharing a large bowl of one of their daily homemade soups, tomato basil with pasta, and added on a toasted poppy seed bagel for just $4.23. The fresh hot soup hit the spot on what was a chilly day. Rich and flavourful, we would definitely order this one again.

We followed the soup with their daily quiche that on this day happened to be savoury sausage and cheese. For just $4.28 we got a huge piece of quiche, a side salad and some tortilla chips. The quiche at Brittany Cafe was more hearty than delicate and was filled with tons of flavourful sausage. In our opinion, this was more than one person could finish for lunch.

We ended our meal with a piece of delicious cranberry walnut spice cake. For $1 - what a deal - we got a generous chunk of this dessert that could have come right out of your grandmother's kitchen. The cake was reminiscent of a traditional gingerbread topped with a mixture of dried cranberries, raisins and walnuts. Add on two cups of their freshly brewed bottomless coffee and we were set for the day.

Visit this casual eatery and find out what all the regulars already know, Brittany Cafe & Bakery is a warm and homey place to enjoy a great breakfast or lunch for a great price. Be forewarned, they don't accept credit cards but with prices so low you could probably pay your bill with the change in your pockets.
